Keyboardist, composer and bandleader Jon Feldman is an award-winning classically trained jazz pianist. He has studied jazz performance at the University of Toronto and the New England Conservatory, and was the recipient of the Duke Ellington Jazz Performance Scholarship in 2006 at U of T.
Feldman is a versatile pianist and keyboard player, playing jazz piano as a solo artist or in his trio, running his experimental klezmer jam band Zebrina, and working as a singer/songwriter with his band Freedom Groove. Feldman is currently working on his latest project, the Jon Feldman Electric Band, which will be recording its first cd in spring 2016.
As a composer, Feldman enjoys writing for his various projects. For Zebrina he focuses on composing music that extends the tradition of klezmer to include influences from jazz fusion, world music, and electronica. In Freedom Groove he writes pop songs inspired by the Beatles, the Grateful Dead, Phish, and Bob Marley. As a jazz pianist he enjoys reworking popular songs like Piano Man (Billy Joel) and 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover (Paul Simon) for his jazz trio.
Feldman has performed with the likes of Ben Goldberg (Tin Hat, Unfold Ordinary Mind, Go Home), David Buchbinder (The Flying Bulgars), Eric Stein (Beyond The Pale), Bret Higgins (Beyond the Pale, The Great Lake Swimmers), Joel Schwartz (Royal Wood, Aviva Chernick), Don Scott (Peripheral Vision), Eric St. Laurent (Eric St. Laurent Trio), and Kevin Turcotte. He has been the recipient of Ontario Arts Council production grants. His music has also appeared in film.
